Summary

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of America's most compelling, charismatic, and yet tragic figures of the twentieth century. He was a black man, a preacher's son himself ordained a minister, who challenged a nation's white-dominated agenda in pursuit of genuine freedom, justice, and equality for an oppressed minority. King was willing to die for the cause, and he was a man of great faith and someone who fervently preached nonviolence as what sometimes was an unpopular means to an end. At times confrontational and at times conciliatory, and always inspirational, King captured the hearts of millions, not just blacks, who fell in behind him in what would be his unfinished quest for a truly free America.
