Summary

M. F. Burnyeat, onetime Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy at the University of Cambridge and Senior Research Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, is one of the greatest ancient philosophers alive today who over more than four decades has consistently produced groundbreaking work. He has ranged widely over many topics, although with a particular emphasis on Plato and Aristotle, and has also studied aspects of the intersection between ancient philosophy and the philosophy of more recent figures such as Descartes, Berkeley and Wittgenstein. Most of his work, however, has been published in the form of articles or individual book chapters rather than whole books. This is the first of two volumes which collect his published work from the period up to 2000. Together they will enable all working in the field of ancient philosophy to reassess the contribution of one of its liveliest and most original minds.
