East Asia has long been the focus of development debates, first as a success story and now as a region in crisis. Nonetheless, there has been little if any serious discussion of what the region's experience tells us about capitalism and the prospects for non-capitalist development alternatives more centered on the needs of workers and communities. Author Biography

Paul Burkett teaches economics at Indiana State University. He is author of Marx and Nature: A Red and Green Perspective.

Martin Hart-Landsberg teaches economics at Lewis & Clark, Portland, Oregon. He is author of Korea: Division, Reunification, and U.S. Foreign Policy.
